Stage theater -- and other types of live theatrical performance -- in Mazatlan has long been dominated by the Angela Peralta Theater (Teatro Ángela Peralta), which is not only one of Mexico's theater gems, but is one of the most spectacular restored 1800's theaters anywhere in the world.
In addition to the plays, dance and musical performances presented at the Angela Peralta, The Pearl of The Pacific also offers another venue where you can enjoy beautifully staged live theatrical performances: the Antonio Haas Theater just off the Malecon at the Fisherman's Monument, which is sometimes referred to as the IMSS Theater.
Mazatlan also has plenty of multi-screen multiplex movie theaters, as well as a two substantial Blockbuster video stores that carry many titles on DVD in English, as well as a selection of foreign and art films with subtitles drawn from cimema from around the world. Angela Peralta Theater / Teatro Ángela Peralta More info about the Angela Peralta Theater in the Mazatlan Centro Historico Since its re-opening after complete reconstruction in 1992, the Angela Peralta has become a magnet for cultural development in Sinaloa, and is home to a municipal cultural center, galleries and an internationally-recognized fine art school.
The Angela Peralta is also home to two important dance organizations: Delfos Contemporary Dance (delfosdanza.com), an internationally recognized dance company and E.P.D.M. (Escuela Profesional de Danza de Mazatlan), our famous dance school. E.P.D.M. graduation performance at the Angela Peralta Theater in 2011
The Angela Peralta Theater in Mazatlan is called by many the Crown Jewel of the Centro Historico.
Opened in 1874, it was originally known as the Teatro Rubio. It was later re-named in memory of the beloved Mexican soprano Angela Peralta -- one of the most famous opera stars of her time -- who was scheduled to perform there and perished in Mazatlan from Yellow Fever in 1883.
Seating just over 800, the Angela Peralta Theater is at once substantial and intimate, making it the perfect performance space for a wide variety of live theatrical performances, including plays, dance -- both Mexican and International companies -- and concerts, both classical and contemporary.
The bottom line: if you've never attended a performance at the Angela Peralta Theater in Mazatlan, whatever is playing you should buy a ticket and go -- the theater itself is worth the price of admission!
Tickets for performances are modestly priced -- downright inexpensive by Canadian and American standards.
The ticket office is at the entrance to the theater just off the Plaza Machado in the Centro Historico. Credit cards accepted.

In many cases English language films are shown with English audio and Spanish subtitles but -- if you don't like overdubbing -- it's always good to check before you buy your ticket!
Schedules of films currently showing at movie theaters in Mazatlan can be viewed on the film listings part of all of the cinemas' websites.
For Americans and Canadians used to high movie theater ticket prices, going to see a film at a Mazatlan multiplex is like rolling your life-film back to the 1970's: tickets are about 3 dollars and those prices are mirrored in the prices of the movie-house food.
It gets even better: there are discount tickets on the Mazatlan movie theater websites if you buy a number of anytime-use tickets at once!
A Note about Mexican Movie Theater Food: Many Mexicans take their film-food dining quite seriously, and there are sinfully fun full-blown super high-calorie theater food meals served on trays that can be bought at most Mazatlan movie theaters! Information about Recommended Movie Theaters in Mazatlan DVD and Video Rental and Purchase Want to rent a movie in Mazatlan? If so, the location where you will probably find the DVD you want will be very familiar: Blockbuster.
While brick-and-mortar film rental may be in decline in the United States and Canada because of Netflix (which has a substantial presence in Mazatlan and throughout Mexico) and other streaming media services, the traditional video store continues to thrive in the Pearl of The Pacific.
There are certainly many Mexican video stores in Mazatlan, but most will probably disappoint American and Canadian visitors. While some are large, they are often packed with very large numbers of the same DVD titles -- making for a limited selection no matter how large the store may be -- and sometimes carry English language films dubbed into Spanish, which is pretty unsatisfying to most native English speakers.
The two Mazatlan Blockbuster stores, on the other hand, carry virtually all of their English language films with English audio, and offer a far wider selection of classic English language cinema DVDs.
Blockbuster Info about DVD / video rental and purchase in Mazatlan The largest Blockbuster Video in Mazatlan is just inland from Valentino's on Camarón Sábalo. It is a substantial store, with a fairly wide selection of movies on DVD to choose from, including a good selection of foreign and art films.
There is also a smaller Blockbuster located on Insurgentes beside the Soriana supermarket, which also carries many foreign movie titles and classic Hollywood cinema.
While it is unlikely -- but not impossible -- that your Blockbuster sales person will speak fluent English, both Blockbusters are friendly places to rent movies, and issue membership cards to tourists and seasonal visitors with reasonable identification.
Both Blockbusters are open every day; have secure off-street parking; 24-hour drop boxes, accept credit cards, sell used and new DVDs and video games, and offer a wide and deep selection of movie-time junk food.
